Ryder is to offload the servicing and maintenance carried out at its own locations to approved dealer partners, resulting in redundancies and workshop closures.

The contract hire and rental firm said it had completed a review into those services and that it would establish a new operational model as a result.

In a statement it said: “Ryder has taken the decision to transfer such services currently delivered by its own locations to approved dealer partners that are part of Ryder’s expanding FleetCare network.

“This evolution of our operational model recognises the enhanced reliability that modern trucks offer, and our customers’ need for maintenance to be carried out ever closer to their sites in order to minimise downtime.”

Ryder also said it would be making some “strategic investments”: “Not only are we expanding the FleetCare network of more than 300 approved dealer partners, but we have also started a significant recruitment drive at its control hub in Devizes and in our Ryder Mobile Maintenance Services Division based in Lichfield,” it said.

“There has also been significant investment in our IT systems to support these expansions.

“In line with this new operational model, we have proposed changes to 16 of 21 locations.

“These changes may include a reduction of the types of services offered, the transfers of services and staff to dealer partners that are part of Ryder’s FleetCare programme, and, regrettably, some redundancies and some workshop closures.”

Ryder added: “As a result of these proposed changes, Ryder has entered a 30-day consultation with the staff that are at risk.

“We are unable to comment further at this point.”

In May, Ryder announced it was expanding its Devizes site and recruiting 25 new staff in its FleetCare business.
