A busy week for us this week as we released half year registration figures for HGVs, buses and coaches. The impact of the pandemic is clear – with registrations of heavy goods vehicles down -73.4% in the second quarter of the year, and bus and coach registrations down -77.1% in the same period.

Restoring operator confidence remains essential for encouraging fleet renewal, a necessary step in driving the country’s recovery, and a green recovery at that. Releasing government investment promised earlier in the year, for example, is crucial to lifting the near standstill of road passenger transport experienced since lockdown measures were enforced in mid-March.

We are however an industry with a long history of innovation. This week’s announcement of a consultation launch into ALKS technology brings us a step closer to a road safety revolution. Please do get in touch if involved in the autonomous space, as your views will likely shape the government’s decision on any future legislation.
