Professor Saville was one of the most prominent occupational psychologists in the UK, who was well known as an instigator of psychometric testing in the modern workplace and a successful entrepreneur.

He is credited with developing more than 100 work-related tests, including the original Occupational Personality Questionnaire and the British Standardisation of the 16 Personality Factor questionnaire. These were considered ground-breaking for their time and have been used on more than 40 million people a year globally.

As a skilled psychometrician and visionary leader, Professor Saville made a huge impact on psychology in the UK and around the world. The widespread use of his tests by major companies and public bodies is testament to his remarkable ideas.

In 2001 he received the BPS’s Centenary Award for Distinguished Contributions to Professional Psychology and in 2012 he was awarded BPS Honorary Fellowship, the highest award the BPS can confer. This was said to be in recognition of his: “Flying the flag for Britain for objective assessment” and “Creating the global gold standard for psychometric tests”.

Janet Fraser, chair of the BPS Division of Occupational Psychology said:

“We were sad to hear of Peter Saville’s passing. He inspired countless members of our profession and we offer our condolences to his family and all who were close to him.”

The British Psychological Society is deeply saddened by the news that the eminent Chartered occupational psychologist Professor Peter Saville has recently died.
